Llyn Padarn & Dolbadarn Castle elopement, North Wales

Maddy & Adam planned to tie-the-knot at the viewpoint of Dinorwig quarry (Dinorwic) with a small number of family as witnesses. Prioritising the nature-loving ceremony that felt right to them, they would do the official / legal side of the wedding later. They went ahead with their outdoor ceremony but due to the iffy forecast they decided to postpone the photography to the following day.

We met at the slightly more sheltered Castell Dolbadarn taking in its spectacular views and dramatic landscape. With the weather holding we took a walk around my favourite North Wales spot for elopement / wedding photographs; Llyn Padarn in Llanberis.

Castell Dolbadarn – Llyn Padarn

Perched above the waters of Llyn Padarn, Welsh-built Castell Dolbadarn once formed a crucial part of the defences of the ancient kingdom of Gwynedd. Believed to be constructed in the late 12th or early 13th century by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (Llywelyn the Great), the 50-foot tower guarded the strategic route leading inland from Caernarfon to the upper Conwy Valley.

Maddy & Adam are both super active and wanted to feature their running shoes as a nod to their shared love of adventure sports. Also keen cyclists, we had planned to capturing some photographs of the bride and groom on bikes in their wedding gear. Although I would’ve loved to capture these cycling newlyweds; they opted to keep it simple and focus on capturing them in the Welsh landscape they love. A lovely tribute to Snowdonia’s adventurous spirit.

If you’re visiting North Wales, Llyn Padarn is the absolute perfect spot to get some fantastic images. Aside from that, I would highly recommend getting on the lake one way or the other. You can rent stand up paddle boards at the lake itself or bring your own SUP. The water is amazing clear (although very cold) for swimming. And on the south side of the lake there are lots of lagoon-like pools with trees overhanging and shallow areas. You can see Lake Padarn’s famous Lonely Tree in that same location. The view alone over Llyn Padarn, Llyn Peris & Snowdon beyond Llanberis is breath-taking.
