WHATS HAPPENING?

I’ll be running mini shoots for families around Newport’s natural beauty spots this summer; Beechwood Park, Belle Vue Park, St Julian’s Park, Ridgeway and Allt-yr-yn nature reserve. Let’s capture your family at play in nature!

WHY THERE?

BEECHWOOD PARK

Beechwood Park is a Victorian park that has many mature trees & a beautiful springtime display that blooms in succession. It has open fields as well as flowerbeds, blossom, large trees & a stream running through; giving us lots of choice for a backdrop.

BELLE VUE PARK

Belle Vue Park is a Victorian park that has many rare plants, established trees & beautiful colours. It’s got the famous pavilion itself as well as bandstand, rockeries, structured flowerbeds & open green space in-between.

ST JULIAN’S PARK

St Julian’s Park, although named ‘park’ is more of an ancient woodland. Relatively quiet, you can go for a walk here without meeting anyone. The forest was a medieval deer park since 1583 and is classed as ‘ancient semi-natural woodland’, meaning that there has been woodland here since the 1600s. There’s also an Iron Age hillfort in the woods. Bluebells in spring, golden leaves & mushrooms in autumn. It’s beautiful all year round and has lots to offer the nature lover.

RIDGEWAY

Ridgeway is a beautiful viewpoint that overlooks Rogerstone and the wooded area of Allt-yr-yn Nature Reserve. The viewpoint is lined with trees, has wild flowers in springtime & a wide-open grassy space for little ones to run. You can walk down the hill into the nature reserve to explore the woodland.

ALLT-YR-YN NATURE RESERVE

Allt-yr-yn Nature Reserve lies between the Monmouthshire-Brecon Canal and Allt-yr-yn viewpoint at Ridegway; a walk along the canal takes you to the Fourteen Locks Canal & Heritage Centre. The woodland itself has lots of beautiful native oak, birch, cherry & alder trees. It has ponds and an ancient wildflower meadow & it used to house an old stone quarry. The woodland is deemed as ‘ancient semi-natural’, similarly to St Julian’s Park, meaning that it has been continuously covered with native trees since the 1600s. Allt-yr-yn nature reserve is a great natural area, brimming with wildlife to explore, play, climbs trees & build a den with your family.
